This is a must for anyone interested in counter culture/youth culture/drug culture/outlaws/hell's angels and everything in between.The '60's biker images are among the best I've ever seen, and his images of the destruction of Lower Manhattan are ghostly, bleak and beautiful.
Danny Lyon was born in 1942 in Brooklyn, New York. At age twenty-one, he joined the Chicago Outlaw Motorcycle club and traveled the American Midwest. From 1963 to 1967, he shared the bikers’ lifestyle and took photos along the way. In 1967, he completed his first book entitled, Bikeriders.
The Destruction of Lower Manhattan, Danny’s second book, was published in 1969 and originally sold for one dollar. It documents the large-scale demolition taking place throughout Lower Manhattan in 1967. Included are photographs of soon to be demolished streets and buildings, portraits of the neighborhood’s last remaining stragglers and pictures from within the demolition sites themselves.
