Whipping Post...The Allman Brothers Band

Crazed guitar extravaganza from The Allman Brothers Band in 1970. Some hell fire cross guitar exchanges between Duane and Dickey Betts. Duanes Les Paul and Dickey's SG. seem to bounce of each other into the stratosphere. Beautiful dual lead interplay with Greg's Keys. But  why oh why have two drummers? Isn't one enough?

Duane died 29th. October 1971 aged 24 in motorcycle accident. A real loss to the guitar world. So, take it away boys, give us some of that southern rockin boogie...

Alman Brothers Band. "Whipping Post" live at the Filmore East, 1970.

  1. Allman Brothers Band? Now there's a band with a great guitarist in Duane Allman and super vocalist and organist (or is that organ player?) in the shape of Mr. Cher (Greg Allman, Duane's brother); and the rest of the band weren't bad either. The first time I heard an album of their's was in a record shop in Newcastle where you could listen to the album before buying. It was in a "sound proof" booth and despite this a guy opened the door and, for the first and last time ever, I was asked what band was playing on the album. It happened to be their eponymous album which I found out later was engineered for maximum volume; those were the days even though I'm a bit "Mutton Jeff" now!
Now I'm going to have a go at the most over-rated guitarist of the era, Eric Clapton. It was odd that one of his most famous songs was "Layla" which boasted an amazing riff. Shame it's Duane Allman playing and NOT Eric. By shame I mean shame on Eric because if you wanted the best then you need look no further than Duane. It's a tragedy that he dies young in 1971 just as they were acclaimed as the best live band in the world and that about a year later the bassist, Berry Oakley, dies in another motorbike accident. Greg and, other lead guitarist and songwriter, Dick Betts continue and achieved commercial success by 1973!
