Why "Break on Through" is one of the greatest debut singles of all time...

It starts with a strange  jazzy bossa kind of rim shot and cymbal shuffle from John Densmore, two bars in comes that slightly distorted organ blasting a weird hybrid of the blues meets Herb Alpert bass line, followed by a snaking counter melody on Robbie's guitar with strange guitar stabs and by the end of the sixth bar Jim Morissons snarling punk croon vocals spit out the line..."You know the day destroys the night, night devides the day, try to run try to hide...break on through to the other side..." Nothing else sounded like it then and nothing sounds quite like it to this day. The Doors debut single was a stunning call to arms for the acid generation, but it had fuck all to do with love peace and flowers, the word that sums it up is DARK!!
